Pub Guide

As a seaside resort, Scarborough is generally welcoming to its visitors. The sea front, around the harbour, boasts some excellent pubs and the best fish & chip restaurants anywhere in the country allowing you top up the cholesterol in equal quantities to the alcohol. Lots of ice cream parlours and cafes, as well.

The Tap and SpileThe Tap and Spile

Unfortunately there are no pubs anywhere near the football ground, so the best bet is the social club in the McCain Stadium.  If  you arrive very early, though, just head further into town from the football ground and you'll find a tremendous choice of pubs on Falsgrave Road. The Tap and Spile on the junction of Seamer Road and Falsgrave Road (heading towards the station) is first class. There's an excellent and large range of real ales on tap, and cider too. Cheap food in hefty portions is available at lunchtimes, and in summer, you can use a small beer-garden at the rear.

Diagonally opposite the Tap and Spile is the New Tavern which has been drastically modernised recently and serves a decent pint. Moving towards the railway station on Falsgrave Road, you will come to The Commercial which has a decent pint of Tetley's, and then there's The Ship Inn which again has a reputation for good cheap food. Families are welcome, and there's a kids' play area at the rear.

Get into the centre of town and there are some superb "real ale" pubs. The Hole In The Wall (does cider and vegetarian food) in Vernon Road, the Indigo Alley (Taylor Landlord but no food) in North Marine Road, and The Cricketers (also on North Marine Road) can all be recommended. Down near the harbour, the Newcastle Packet and The Lancaster are good pubs.

Finally, close to the station, you'll see the Lord Rosebery, a big Wetherspoons place built on two levels of a Victorian building, where inside you will find plenty of real ales, some farmhouse cider, and food served round the clock. Very cheap, quite noisy at times. You may prefer the Old Vic, just opposite the railway station.
